Since Hurricane Katrina, not enough attention has been given to the needs of young people in the city. The Hot 8 Brass Band wants to be part of helping their community move forward and understands that investing in young people now is essential for developing healthy communities in New Orleans and throughout the country. The Hot 8 Brass Band and Finding Our Folk are hosting an 8-week music-learning experience to educate, inspire and engage young people in the history, music and culture of the great City of New Orleans.
In the 8-week series, young people will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills; become familiar with various musical instruments and techniques; learn the history of musical greats and develop their own capacity to be a resource to and organize in their own communities.
Some of the Featured workshops are: Knowledge is Power! History of New Orleans Musical Culture History of brass bands of New Orleans; social aid and pleasure clubs: influential elements of brass band music (ragtime, Jelly roll Morton, etc.) and the history of New Orleans musical greats.
Know Yourself!: Self-Discipline and Musicianship Participants become familiar with various musical instruments; develop communication skills; improve time management and self-control.
Social Justice and Social Change: Engage participants in a conversation on the different forms (expressions) of social injustice; conduct research and develop action plans to transform the landscape of their communities.
Instrument Basics: Educate and introduce youth to brass instruments, the art of different sounds, rhythms and techniques; respect and honor for craft and maintenance of instruments.
